My 4yr old son is in the process of autism evaluations. He doesn't handle excitement well, he prefers to do puzzles, line his cars and trucks up, or watch the same movie morning til bedtime. When our routine is abruptly changed (even slightly) he cries, screams, doesn't articulate anything, and becomes so frustrated that he kicks and throws things. Some days, I am positive he has a form of autism. Then there are days I wonder if I am searching too hard for an answer. A friend of mine used to work with special needs children in school. She was shocked when I told her that my son was not special needs, because of the signs she noticed. At this time, the autism specialist is confident that my son is not autistic. However she won't make it official, due to the various "soft signs" my son has displayed. His sensitivity to sound goes well beyond the average childs fear of noise. If I need to vaccuum my floor, he runs to his room, puts the blanket over his head, and covers his ears. He won't come out until my daughter goes in and gets him (they are twins). I have taken pictures of some amazing works that he has done with videos, and toys. I don't know if he only lines and stacks things when he is bored or when he needs more order. If anyone has suggestions, please share them with me. I sure could use the help.

My son is 12 years old and was diagnosed with autism 10 years ago. He has been in special ed since he started school. And he has always had a para educator with him throughout his scholastic career. I learned recently that, while many special ed teachers go that extra mile for their students and try to learn more about their problems so as to facilitate their learning, there are others who choose to go blindly into it, thinking that what works for the other kids will work for the new ones too. I heard of a special ed teacher that was upset because my son would not conform to HER schedule. Come to find out that she has never dealt with autism before and knows nothing about how to deal with an autistic child. How can she expect a child to conform if he can't be understood by his own teacher? This is frustrating to say the least.

Through the meltdowns, stimming, running off, outbursst, destruction, selfinjurious behaviors in ability to talk, or in some cases obsessive one sided coversa tions, rituals that must be fallowed, obsessions, hyper sensitivity, over stimulation, repetitive behaviors and all the other unpleasant things that come with having an autistic child/friend/ loved one it is often all to easy to forget some of the lessons autism teaches us.
sometimes it is better to sit and do a puzzle

you don't always need the latest and greatest sometimes a spinning blinking abject can be just as much fun l

there are many things we take for granted like the ability to communicate verbally and nonverbally

there are different ways to handle a situation

detail can be just important as the whole picture

people with autism don't lie (and aren't good at it when they do)

Sometimes you need to be stubborn

if you keep at something you might you might actually achieve it

People with autism love unconditionally something most people don’t do.

Their abilities are limitless

Traditions, promises, honesty and love are the most important things in life.

NEVRE forget they aren’t just autistic they are human and no matter how far off they seem they are in there and they have thoughts fear and feelings too!

I came up with this list after reading around the autism forum on here. Please feel free to add to this list

Autism has changed my life in so many ways, n ways I never knew it could be changed.. Hearing the word autism in relation to someone you love and care deeply for, a brother, sister, cousin, neighbor, your own child a close friend, can be heart wrenching. This simple word gives you many answers but leaves you with even more questions. You feel afraid and worried, you feel relieved to finally KNOW what’s going on to have at least some answers! Autism effects a few people I know the son of a friend, my cousin a couple of online friends and a very close friend of mine that I conceder to be my little sister.

The word Autism means something different to everyone and i want to know What does it mean to you. Good or bad What do you think of when you hear the word Autism?

Here is What I think of When I hear the word Autism

When I hear the word Autism I think back to the first time I had heard it years before it had any effect on my life. I think of the days when to me it was an empty word.

I remember the times it kept me up at night wondering what was going on with Josh's girlfriend . Knowing somehow she was different but not knowing why. Wondering asking questions to myself like Why wasn't she look everyone else? Why couldn't I figure out what was wrong? What was it that made her different? Why didn't she look any one in the eyes? Why did she react to things that didn't bother me like the feel of towels?

I remember the day I went to my grandfathers grave and begged for answers then comming home and finding a flyer about autism in the screen door and tossing it away.

Night she told me she was autistic.

I think of the tears and the meltdowns

I think of bubbles and puzzles

of the over maturity and childishness seeming to blend together

think of the night mares she has and about sleep ess nights.

I think of repetitive behaviors and stemming

I think of picture schedules and service dogs

I think of the many questions still unanswered

Of over sensitivity to light sound smells touch and over stimulation

of the laughter and the good times

I think of eyes that draw you in

and all the things I have learned from her and every one else I have met with autism since

I a reminded that autism effects everyone diffrently

I think oh routines

and of obsessions over special interests

I think of challenges and triumphs

I think of how the world must look to her

the times of hyerness and of self isolation

of weighted blankets

and hearing listening to the same song or band and watching the same move (or part of a movie) or tv show over and over and over and over and over and over and over again

of hearing about the same topic over and over again

of excessive talking and excessive silence.

These are just a few things I think of when I think about autism.

In October, my 2 1/2 year old son was diagnosed with autism. It has been a really hard time and it gets very frustrating. What bothers me the most is the way people in society responds to him. We have been in stores, the library and other common places and the looks and glares that I get are just unbelievable. So my request for publishing this is to please donate to Austism: Help solve the puzzle. Please spread the word to your family and friends, if you see a child acting out in a public place it may not be bad behavior.
